How to count words and characters
Type or paste anything into the box. The counts update as you type: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, and how long the text takes to read (at 238 words a minute, a typical adult reading speed) or to say out loud (150 words a minute, a good pace for a talk or a video voice-over).
Does my text fit on X, Google or YouTube?
The Does it fit? list checks your text against the limits you meet most: a 280-character post on X, a 160-character meta description, a 60-character page title for search results, an SMS, an Instagram caption, a LinkedIn post and a YouTube title. Green means it fits, with the characters you have left; red shows how far over you are.
Does it work in Tamil, Sinhala and other languages?
Yes. Words and characters are counted with your browser's own language rules, so Tamil, Sinhala, Hindi, Arabic, Chinese and Japanese text is counted the way a reader sees it, and an emoji (even one with a skin tone) counts as one character.
What are "most used words" for?
They show the words you repeat most, without little words like "the" and "and". Useful for spotting a word you overuse in an essay, or for checking an article mentions its main topic often enough for search engines.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Everything is counted by your browser, so your text never leaves your device.
